CSL 8 : Integrated Chinese L1-P2

1.     Integrated Chinese Level I Part II: Textbook (required)
2.     Integrated Chinese Level I Part II: Workbook (required)
3.     Integrated Chinese Level I Part II: character workbook (recommended)

Language Objectives:
To further develop basic abilities from basic to intermediate in areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese.

Class expectations:
1.     Attendance is an essential course requirement.  Active participation is expected. We are going to have discussions from textbook materials, classroom practices of vocabulary and grammar patterns, and potential group-based tasks.
2.     Please come to class on time.  Leave 10 minutes early or arriving 10 minutes late will be considered as an absence.
3. All announcements and handouts will be posted at  https://ncsintegratedchinese1.blogspot.com/. Please check the website every week before and after class to get informed.
4.     Please turn off your cellular phones in the classroom.

Oral Evaluations:
1.   One Oral evaluation (after the mid-term) and one final presentation (before the final) are required.
2.    The oral evaluation involves carrying out a dialogue with another student. Several topics will be given one week before the mid-term. During the oral evaluation, one of these topics will randomly be assigned to the student in pairs to perform a dialogue on. Students will be evaluated according to the fulfillment of the task.
3. The final presentation can be a group project involving two or three students. More information will be provided as the time comes.

Homework
1. Regular assignments: Homework from the workbook. The listening sections required audiotapes/CD that can be ordered online.
2.     Assignments should be completed and submitted by the due day.
3.     Sloppily written homework or homework with too many errors will be returned to students for re-submission, which may result in reduced grades.  Homework is graded in 6 levels:
a)       5: excellent work submitted on time
b)      4: good work submitted on time.
c)       3: average work submitted on time
d)      2: re-submitted work of good quality
e)       1: re-submitted work of average quality or returned work without re-submission
f)        0: unacceptable work, missing homework, or homework submitted late

Extra Credit:
1. Chinese book: A student may create a Chinese book for an extra credit up to 5 points. The book should be typed and may include related pictures. It is due by the last class session.  
2. story-telling contest: The whole school will hold a story-telling contest on 10/19, students are encouraged to participate. More information will be provided later.
